Keyboard Shortcuts for Mute: Skype & Google Hangouts

Do you spend an inordinate amount of time on conference calls? From noisy offices, coffee shops or coworking spaces? Are the children making a racket in the background whilst you’re sharing your words of wisdom?

<tl;dr> Here’s the keyboard shortcuts to mute your microphone for Skype and Google Hangouts </tl;dr>

Mute is your friend.

And so much more. It draws a veil of audio decency over the pandemonium happening right behind us.

If like me, you’ve made the mad dash for the keyboard. Desperately searched for the right window. Hoped beyond hope that your erratic mouse click has hit mute rather than end call. This post is for you.

Here’s the keyboard shortcuts for Skype and Google Hangouts.

Google Hangouts

Toggle Mute on/off…

  • PC – Ctrl+D
  • Mac – ⌘+D

For the full list of Google Hangouts keyboard shortcuts, here’s the list for both PC and Mac.

Skype

Toggle Mute on/off…

NB. For PCs (I can’t test, I’m on a Mac), it looks like you need to enable keyboard shortcuts. Mac users, you lucky people, they’re turned on by default.

  • Mac – ⇧ + ⌘ + M
  • PC – Ctrl + M

For the full list of hotkeys, as Skype calls them, check out the manual pages for PC and Mac.

Steps to enable keyboard shortcuts for Skype PC:

  1. Sign in to Skype
  2. Go to Tools > Options
  3. Click the Advanced tab and select Hotkeys
  4. Check Enable keyboard shortcuts
  5. Click Save in the bottom right-hand corner
